About

The Cohorte de formation sur l'adaptation aux changements climatiques is an initiative aimed at helping Quebec's tourism sector integrate sustainable practices in response to climate challenges. This six-month program offers structured support, including expert guidance and thematic spaces for discussion and deeper engagement.

In July, two thematic sessions highlighted innovative and inspiring adaptation approaches from other sectors such as health and agriculture. Understanding these methods benefits tourism associations in planning and implementing their own climate adaptation actions.

The VRAC-PARC Approach

The VRAC-PARC approach, developed by the public health sector, is a successful example of adaptation and regional collaboration. Implemented across all health regions in Quebec, it serves as a reference for other sectors, including tourism.

The VRAC-PARC method uses vulnerability analysis and risk assessment. Although useful, this process can be complex, time-consuming, and costly.

VRAC-PARC Highlights:

  • Reusable Tools and Results: VRAC-PARC results are accessible and can be reused to understand specific vulnerabilities and risks for each tourist region.
  • Collaborative Process: The VRAC-PARC network and the lessons learned offer tourism the chance to connect with other actors and explore partnerships with local organizations like municipalities, scientific experts, and public health authorities to strengthen their adaptation actions.
The Agriclimat Approach

The Agriclimat approach, initiated by the agricultural sector and supported by various experts and institutions, is another successful climate adaptation example. It involves a wide range of participants, including producers, agronomists, researchers, and educational institutions, ensuring a comprehensive and informed approach to adaptation at various scales..

Agriclimat Highlights:

  • Accessible Regional Adaptation Plans: The approach has led to regional adaptation plans highlighting climate-related threats and opportunities. These plans are available for consultation and provide action guidelines at provincial, regional, sectoral, and even business levels.
  • Reusable Resources and Tools: Agriclimat has developed various communication and training tools, such as webinars, fact sheets, and guides. These resources, available on Agriclimat’s website, can serve as models for diagnostics and action plan preparation for tourism businesses.

The July thematic events provided the cohort with valuable opportunities to explore exemplary climate adaptation approaches like VRAC-PARC and Agriclimat. These approaches offer models and tools that the tourism sector can adapt to its own needs for better preparation and effective climate impact mitigation. Two more thematic events will be held soon.
