Close to home: How to build more housing in a changing climate

In Canada, the race to build housing faces an urgent reality: floods and wildfires increasingly threaten communities. This presentation outlines the results of the Close to Home study by the Canadian Climate Institute, which shows how better land-use planning can avoid billions of dollars in damages to new housing and improve their climate resilience.

Learning objectives

  • Understand the extent of climate risk for current and future housing in Canada.

  • Identify gaps in land-use policies that encourage construction in risk zones.

  • Explore concrete solutions for building safely without slowing down housing supply.
