Thunderstorms and lightning

Quebecers are no strangers to thunderstorms. When the sky darkens and wind speeds increase, it’s important to take shelter. Due to their violent and unpredictable nature, thunderstorms can have a number of socio-economic and environmental impacts.

Social and economic impacts

Lightning, strong winds and flash flooding often accompany thunderstorms, endangering people’s lives and safety.

Heavy rains sometimes cause damage to essential infrastructure such as roads, power lines and communications networks, resulting in traffic delays and power outages. When accompanied by high winds, thunderstorms can also damage or destroy residential buildings or cars, resulting in high repair costs.

Environmental impact

The heavy rainfall accompanying thunderstorms sometimes causes flooding, damaging natural ecosystems, farmland and residential areas, as well as polluting watercourses. Soil erosion can happen, leading to loss of fertility in agricultural land and degradation of natural habitats.
