Knowledge transfer on climate change and the results of such activities: Case study of the Agriclimat project

The aim of this project is to study the knowledge transfer methods implemented by Agriclimat and to analyze their results. The strategies will be used to improve the knowledge transfer on climate change adaptation performed by other organizations in Quebec.

Context

Currently, Quebec’s agricultural sector is central to its climate change issues. For one things, it is directly affected by the consequences of climate change. Secondly, it contributes 9.2% of Quebec’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. A number of initiatives have been put in place to meet the agricultural sector’s climate change mitigation and adaptation objectives, including the Agriclimat project spearheaded by the CDAQ since 2017, which has been associated with Ouranos since its inception. These knowledge transfer measures aim to raise awareness and support agricultural decision-makers in changing their practices, through knowledge brokering, training, advisory services, fact sheets and guides, and more.

Objective(s)

To learn from the knowledge transfer activities of the Agriclimat project in order to suggest some promising avenues for future phases and for other strategic sectors and organizations wishing to implement climate change mitigation and adaptation measures.

Methodology

  • Summarize Agriclimat’s activities and practices and compare them with “best practices” in the field.

  • Assess the effects of the knowledge transfer process and tools and their benefits by working with the people who led the project and those who participated these activities. This will identify factors and methods that appear to facilitate the process and those that do not.

  • With representatives from related sectors, identify complementarities in order to draw conclusions on what could be applied (or not), and consider things that could cause difficulties or that could be helpful.

Expected results

  • Improvement of the CDAQ’s and Ouranos’ expertise on climate change knowledge transfer

  • An examination of the Agriclimat project by those involved in it

  • Identification of important factors influencing knowledge transfer on climate change adaptation in the agricultural sector, as well as in similar sectors such as tourism

Benefits for adaptation

Benefits for adaptation

This project aims to assess and learn from the knowledge transfer measures undertaken as part of the Agriclimat project between 2017 and 2024.

The results obtained should promote changes to Quebec’s agricultural practices in order to mitigate its contribution to climate change and accelerate its adaptation to it.

Funding

This project is funded by the Government of Quebec and meets the objectives of the 2030 Plan for a Green Economy.
