Unifed IT infrastructure for the production of the Hydroclimatic Atlas (INPACT project)
Once completed, this project will provide a robust research tool for investigating various questions related to hydrology and climate change in Quebec. It will also offer a way for the hydrological modelling community in Quebec to work together and discuss new developments in the field.

Context
The Hydroclimatic Atlas of Southern Québec presents the water regimes of the recent past and future projections for southern Quebec. Its purpose is to support the implementation of climate-resilient water management practices. It has become indispensable to many users, who rely on it for a wide variety of applications. However, the production of the latest version of the Hydroclimatic Atlas demonstrated the limitations of the current infrastructure in terms of development and the integration of new components, especially those created by external collaborators. Therefore, this project proposal aims to set up an IT structure for the fifth version of the Hydroclimatic Atlas, planned for 2027.
Objective(s)
-
Improve the robustness of the computer codes for the production of the Hydroclimatic Atlas, as well as their durability, quality and transparency
-
Facilitate collaborations with other organizations
-
Facilitate the process of integrating developments made during projects or collaborations in order to benefit effectively from the most recent scientific innovations
-
Reduce the risk of redundancy with other current or future projects
-
Increase the robustness of hydroclimatic projections in the atlas
-
Make the production of the Hydroclimatic Atlas more efficient
This project is part of the INFO-Crue initiative set up by the MELCCFP.
Methodology
-
Creation of a hydrological simulation production chain with HYDROTEL in Python
-
Use of a software hosting and web development management service to integrate developments
-
Implementation of a sequencer to automate the organization of calculations
-
Addition of the HBV-EC hydrological model into the Hydroclimatic Atlas production chain
-
Development of a Python library for the analysis and visualization of hydrological simulations
Expected results
This project aims first and foremost to provide a solid, reliable framework for the current and future development of the atlas. It is also an opportunity for collaboration between several organizations facing common issues in the field of hydrology in Quebec, including the Government of Québec, Ouranos, Hydro-Québec and researchers from Quebec universities. This project will therefore offer a platform through which these partners will be able to coordinate and share the analysis methods that they have developed over the last few years or that they will develop during the project.
