Nunavik Climate Change Adaptation Strategy: A Tool Developed by and for the Inuit

Summary
The impacts of climate change are increasingly affecting the lifestyle, culture, and well-being of the Inuit in Nunavik. From 2019 to 2024, Nunavik organizations and communities collaborated to develop the very first Nunavik Climate Change Adaptation Strategy. This tool aims to guide the implementation of adaptation initiatives over the next 10 years. This presentation will discuss the collaborative process behind the Strategy’s development, its content, and the implementation process that will be put in place.

Philippe Leblanc-Rochette is Environmental Coordinator at Makivvik and holds a Master's degree in Land Use Planning and a Bachelor's degree in Social and Cultural Anthropology. In 2023, Philippe joined Makivvik, the organization responsible for protecting the rights and interests of Nunavik Inuit under the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement. His role encompasses various responsibilities, such as the analysis of environmental regulations and impact studies carried out in Nunavik, as well as the development of tools to improve the implementation of environmental assessment procedures in Nunavik. Philippe led the development and now oversees the implementation of Nunavik's Climate Change Adaptation Strategy, in collaboration with Nunavik communities and organizations. His academic and professional background has led him to work with numerous aboriginal communities on a variety of environmental issues.
