Winds and storms

In order to limit the risks and damage caused by high winds and different types of storms, effective adaptation measures are important. Of these, warning and monitoring systems, public awareness and education, spatial planning and stronger infrastructure are essential.

Alerting and monitoring systems

The establishment of early warning and monitoring systems makes it possible to warn populations in the event of imminent high winds. These systems disseminate information and safety instructions so that people can take the necessary precautions. It’s important to be notified of alerts and be prepared to respond quickly when a storm threatens your area.

In Quebec, Environment and Climate Change Canada is responsible for warnings on different types of storms. It issues warnings for various hazardous weather events, which are classified according to the Government of Canada’s criteria for public weather alerts

In the event of a tornado, the alert is automatically sent out via Québec Alert Ready.

Public awareness and education

Combined with alerting and monitoring systems, public awareness of the risks associated with high winds is important to encourage preparedness. Awareness and education campaigns can inform residents on safety measures to take in the event of high winds, emergency instructions and ways to protect themselves.

Land use planning

Land use planning also plays an important role in adapting to high winds. The risks related to winds and storms must be taken into account in urban planning. In this way, it is possible to limit or avoid construction in areas exposed to strong winds or to strengthen existing infrastructure to make it more resilient.

Strengthening infrastructure, such as roads and buildings, can be done by using more resistant building materials. Stricter building standards can also strengthen infrastructure in the long run.
